The rich, tawny sheen of cat'tiger’s-eye quartz, commonly called tiger’s-eye, demonstrates how its name originated. An optical property called chatoyancy is responsible for the eyelike aspect of the stone. Originally, the stone contained fibrous crystals of asbestos, but these were dissolved and replaced by quartz and iron oxides that reproduced their structure exactly. These irregular inner crystals reflect light, glowing as an actual eye might. |
